Culture of Yangzhou is unique and charming, with many household-known stories, such as the beautiful scenery of the 24 bridges in Tang dynasty, the romance of Pingshan residence in North Song dynasty and the anecdotes of the Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics.

Culture of Yangzhou has made tremendous contributions to the accumulation of Chinese civilization. Dong Zhongshu, head of Jiangdu (the previous name of Yangzhou ) in West Han Dynasty, was the first one to promote the Confucianism as the official ideology of Chinese imperial state, which laid a foundation for the ruling thoughts of China for thousands of years.

Zhang Ruoxu, poet of the Tang Dynasty born in Yangzhou , wrote his masterpiece Moonlit Flowers by the Spring River, which gained the reputation as “this piece of poem tops those else in the Tang dynasty.” Yangzhou also brought out numerous men of letters during the Ming and Qing dynasties, such as Shi Nai'an, Wu Jingzi, Cao Xueqin , and Gong Zizhen, whose great achievements in literature are closely linked with the humanity environment of Yangzhou .

The Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, the crafts, drama, opera arts, cuisine, gardens, engravings, and academic style of Yangzhou combined to add splendor to culture of Yangzhou .
