Built in the thirtieth year of Emperor Guang Xu's reign in the Qing dynasty, Official Wu's Residence is a Zhejiang-style complex of the largest scale in Jiangsu province, and is the “Ninety-nine and a half rooms” according to the local people. With more than a hundred rooms, it is known as one of the three luxury houses in the south of Yangtze River .
Wu Yinsun, the owner of the residence, was once head of the Ningbo-Shaoxing Region. The architecture is mostly of East Zhejiang style and meanwhile features the traditional Yangzhou flavor. It has a grand scale, delicate structure, exquisite carving techniques, which makes it in a class of its own.
Cehai Pagoda in the residence is an imitation of the Tianyi Pavilion in Ningbo . It is renowned for its book collection of over 200 thousand volumes. |
